Candlelight vigil honors three Penrose teens

The hymn "Amazing Grace" softly permeates through the crowd of the more than 300 people who gathered at Pioneer Park in Florence Sunday night.  The light of a candle spreads through the crowd just as softly, lit by the parents of three teenage girls killed in a car crash.

Jessica (Jessy) Dunovsky, Lacey Dunovsky, and Abelina Gallegos died Thursday night when their Jeep rolled off County Road 123, east of Highway 67 in Fremont County.  Colorado State Troopers say speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, and add no one was wearing her seat belt.

Abelina Gallegos would have been a Junior at Florence High School.  Jessy Dunovsky, a Senior, and her sister, Lacey, a Sophomore.

"We just want to tell you how grateful we are for the love and support you've shown up. It's been almost overwhelming, but it is what has gotten us this far. I appreciate it very much," says Jim Dunovsky, father of Jessy and Lacey.

"Thank you for your love and support," says Jon Gallegos, father of Abelina.

"She was my best friend," says Lacey's friend, Kaytin Allen. "We went camping about a week before all this happened.  It was a lot of fun."

Members of the Florence High School Drum Corp give Abelina's parents a pair of drumsticks at the vigil.  She was a member of the corp, and hailed as a talented musician.

Abelina's brother and many friends wear pictures of Abelina and Lacey with crosses, around their necks and close to their hearts.

One woman writes the words, "such fond memories" in a scrapbook for the families.  For many others, no words describe their feelings.  They show it in tears and with plenty of hugs for each other and family members.

Community members are working to put together a memorial fund for each family.  Abelina Gallegos is survived by her parents, five brothers, and two sisters.  Jessy and Lacey Dunovsky are survived by their parents and two brothers.
