A new study suggests vitamin B6 could play a large role in preventing lung cancer.

A European study of nearly 400,000 adults found having above average blood levels of vitamin B6 and an amino acid called methionine, reduced the risk for lung cancer by 50 percent -- even among smokers or people who used to smoke.

Vitamin B6 is available in supplement form or is found in fortified cereal, beans and meat. Methionine is found in most protein-rich foods.

The study also showed a lower risk for lung cancer among smokers or former smokers who had high levels of folate -- another type of B vitamin.

The study was conducted at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in France and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

If you've been diagnosed with cancer, contact the Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary Corwin Hospital. Caring doctors and other health professionals will take the time to explain treatment options, and devise specialized treatment programs.
