CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) - The Bureau of Land Management is raising fees for two Shelf Road Recreation Area campgrounds north of Canon City.

Starting March 1, fees for The Bank and Sand Gulch will increase from $4 to $7 for individual sites. Fees for group sites will rise from $8 to $14.

The BLM originally had proposed raising the fee for individual sites from $4 to $10, but several members of the public said that was too much.

Keith Berger of the BLM says the increased revenue will be used to upgrade restrooms, campsites, roads and signs.

The Shelf Road Recreation Area had about 64,000 visitors in 2008, representing a threefold increase since 2005. The BLM says maintenance costs for the campgrounds have increased by more than 25 percent since 2006.
