Calmer weather has arrived along the Gulf Coast, where masses of oil continue to lurk offshore. So far, only oil sheens have reached into some coastal waters.

The oil's slow progress is allowing crews and volunteers to lay boom in front of shorelines. The calmer wind and waves should help. The slick isn't expected to reach beaches from Mississippi to the Florida Panhandle before Thursday, but that hasn't lessened worries about its impact.

Restaurateurs, hotel owners, fishermen and beachfront property owners are waiting to see how they'll be hurt.
