Calif. woman gives birth in a bookstore

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) - A woman walked into a Los Angeles-area Barnes & Noble looking for books and came out with a baby instead.

Firefighters delivered the baby Friday night in the bookstore's lobby at Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance.

Fire Department Capt. Steve Deuel says firefighters responded to a call of a woman in labor and were deciding whether to put her in an ambulance or keep her in the store when the baby made the decision for them. They delivered a healthy boy.

Deuel says the mother and child, whose names were not released, were taken to a hospital and both are doing well.

He says while it's increasingly rare that firefighters deliver babies, they're trained to do it.
