Cabinet members visit fire area

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack are in Colorado Springs to view the Waldo Canyon fire and speak with incident commanders.

The cabinet members announced a transition from the acute crisis phase of the disaster to recovery. Secretary Napolitano announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be in place to provide a variety of federal services to the victims of the fire. Secretary Vilsack also announced that he has assigned a secretarial disaster declaration to enable federal emergency loans to be awarded to fire victims.

The Waldo Canyon Fire is now 70 percent contained and incident commander Rich Harvey announced that some of the firefighters will begin leaving the area to work more urgent fires.
