Cañon City Council appears unanimously poised to allow retail sales of recreational marijuana within city limits. Council members held an informal straw poll Wednesday in which they agreed to move forward in seeking input from city planning and zoning officials about how to regulate retail marijuana sales in Cañon City, according to council member Colby Katchmar. A workshop on March 5 will begin that process. Katchmar says council is eager to "move forward more aggressively rather than drag our feet." Katchmar said Pueblo West to Cañon City's east and Salida to the city's west have both legalized retail sales and reaped the early benefits and he believes Cañon City, as a community highly dependent on tourism, should capitalize on the "opportunity" to bring more tourists to the city. Cañon City is currently under a temporary moratorium on recreational retail marijuana, which expires April 1.
