Broadcasters ask Supreme Court to allow cameras for health care case

The Radio and Television News Directors Association has sent a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts asking him allow television and audio coverage of the oral arguments presented to the Supreme Court of the United States regarding the constitutionality of the individual mandate requirement of the health care reform act.
In the letter, RTDNA Chairman Kevin Benz points out that the limited space in the courtroom validates "the media's claim that it acts as a surrogate for the public in providing access to those proceedings."
The nation's highest court has historically opposed televising arguments. However, the court has made audio recordings of oral arguments publicly available since October of 2010.
