British woman to attempt solo Antarctica crossing

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - British adventurer Felicity Aston is headed for Antarctica, where she'll attempt to become the first person to cross the icy continent alone using only muscle power. Aston is about to board a charter flight from Chile that will take her to a base in Antarctica on Friday. From there she'll get dropped off with her skis and sledge on the rocky coast. Then she'll ski up a glacier and through the Transantarctic Mountains. She will be hauling more than 180 pounds (80 kilos) against the wind in 40-below temperatures all the way to the South Pole. Lots of other expeditions are headed there this year for Dec. 14th's 100th anniversary of the first successful polar expedition. But Aston plans to keep skiing to the other side of Antarctica, a total of 1,000 miles (1,700 kilometers).
