BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Boulder police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a longtime suspect in the 1983 fatal shooting of a University of Colorado student.

Police said Thursday that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Thayne Smika in the slaying of Sid Wells, his roommate. Smika has been the prime suspect since Wells, who was dating the daughter of actor-director Robert Redford, was shot in his Boulder condominium.

Police don't know the whereabouts of 51-year-old Smika, who faces a first-degree murder charge and bail of $5 million. They think he might have fled to another country.

People with information about Smika can call a hotline at 303-441-1974.
