BLM releases decision on Colo. horse gather plan

NORWOOD, Colo. (AP) - The Bureau of Land Management plans to gather about 60 wild horses in the Spring Creek Basin Herd Management Area southwest of Norwood, starting Sept. 15.

The agency released the final environmental assessment and decision record for the gather plan this week. The planned round-up was among two proposed for Colorado this fall.

The agency says around 50 of the gathered horses will be removed from the area. Up to 10 will be released back into the area to maintain herd population, with mares being given a contraceptive first. About 25 of the horses will be available for adoption.

The BLM says there are an estimated 90 wild horses in the herd management area, but the ideal level is between 35 and 65.
