BLM considers spaying wild horses

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - The federal Bureau of Land Management is hoping spaying will help control wild horse herds.

The agency is seeking advice from veterinarians about the best way to conduct field spayings. A lot of research would be required before the program goes into effect.

According to the Denver Post, the BLM has had to take a new look at population-control measures because contraceptive drugs haven't worked well to reduce herd sizes. Birth-control drugs are effective for less than two years and require expensive repeat roundups.
