Blizzard Warning issued for I-25 Corridor

The National Weather Service in Pueblo has issued a Blizzard Warning for the I-25 corridor beginning 3 AM Tuesday and ending at 6 PM Tuesday.

Watches, Warnings, and Advisories

The Blizzard Warning includes El Paso County, Pueblo County, eastern Fremont County, Huerfano County, and western Las Animas County. These cities are included in the warning: Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Monument, Calhan, Falcon, Ellicott, Rush, Penrose, Canon City, Walsenburg, and Trinidad.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo defines a blizzard as 35+ mph wind for at least three hours with falling or blowing snow that reduces to less than a quarter-mile. There is no actual requirement for HOW MUCH snow has to fall, just that it is falling and blowing around enough to limit the visibility.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for western El Paso County (including Manitou Springs), Teller County, the Wet Mountains, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for western Fremont county and the Southeastern Plains. The counties included are Crowley, Otero, Bent, Prowers, Baca, and eastern Las Animas.

Forecast Snow Totals

Northern El Paso County near Monument, Black Forest, and Calhan along with Teller County, the Wet Mountains, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains could see 8-14". Isolated locations, especially in the Wet Mountains, could see over 18".

Central and Southern El Paso County - including Colorado Springs, Fountain, and Ellicott - Pueblo County, eastern Fremont County, eastern Huerfano County, and western Las Animas County could see 3-8".

In the Southeastern Plains, some areas may see as little as a dusting while others may see 1-3" of snow fall.

Things to Know

The Tuesday morning commute likely will be marked by low visibility and blowing snow, making for very dangerous driving conditions along the I-25 corridor and in mountainous areas just west of I-25. If you have to drive, remember to give yourself plenty of time so you can slow down to safely reach your destination. If you become stranded, remember to stay with your vehicle until help arrives.

Conditions will begin improving after 2 PM Tuesday, though flurries could persist through early Wednesday.
