A Colorado company is using old billboards to make bags and purses.
There are an estimated 400K billboards in the U.S., each covered with giant plastic advertisements. Typically, the old ads end up in the landfill.
Now a Denver-based company, Billboard Ecology, is transforming them into shopping bags, lunch bags and totes. Jerry Wheeler said, "14x48 Is the average billboard size. We can make roughly about 67 tote bags, large shopping totes, out of that."
The bags are sold primarily through schools as a fundraiser. The schools get 50-percent of the profits.
