NAGS HEAD, N.C. (AP) - Hurricane Irene is living up to her billing as one of the harshest storms to hit the East Coast in many years. The hurricane pummeled the North Carolina shoreline and forced down utility poles and snapped tree limbs as it roared over land today. One death has been reported - a man who was struck by a falling limb near Raleigh, N .C. Officials in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey are bracing for the onslaught of the heavy
winds, as is New York city. And forecasters say Irene's effects could be felt as far north as Canada.
