Be aware of flooding... even after rain ends!

Although the threat for flash flooding is diminishing quickly, it's important to remember the rivers and creeks can continue rising even after the rain has ended.

A Flood Warning (NOT a Flash Flood Warning) is in effect for El Paso and eastern Teller Counties for an increased likelihood of flooding along creeks and streams. A Flood Warning is also in effect for Fountain Creek at Colorado Springs until Friday afternoon. At 1:30 AM Friday, Fountain Creek was measured at 5.9 feet at the Colorado Springs measuring site. Water is expected to rise Friday morning to near its flood stage of 8.0 feet.

Things to remember:

  • Stay away from the banks of creeks, streams, and rivers! The banks are saturated and can break easily, and you can be swept away by abnormally fast and intense water flow.
  • DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH WATER-COVERED ROADS! If water is covering the road, turn around and find an alternate route.
  • Be extra aware and cautious of animals. Flooding can force animals out of their underground burrows. Many of these animals will be scared and abnormally aggressive.
