Avs to celebrate 15th anniversary of first Stanley Cup

DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club will celebrate the 15-year anniversary of the 1995-96 Stanley Cup Championship team with a special two-day reunion, Oct. 6-7, launching the 2010-11 Avalanche regular season.

Coaches and players from the 1996 Cup-winning team will be on hand for the 15-year reunion, representing Colorado's first major professional sports championship. The reunion will culminate with a pre-game ceremony prior to Colorado's Opening Night matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, Oct. 7 at Pepsi Center.

"It should be a very unique event, with members of the first Avalanche team reunited along with the 2010-11 edition," said Avalanche President Pierre Lacroix. "That 1996 Stanley Cup team created a winning tradition in a very short period of time, setting the standard for everyone who has ever worn the ‘A' to follow."

The 1995-96 campaign was the Avalanche's inaugural season in Denver after relocating from Quebec that summer. Colorado captured the Pacific Division title with a 47-25-10 record and 104 points during the regular season, then knocked off the Vancouver Canucks, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings in the playoffs to advance to the Stanley Cup Final. On June 10, 1996, Uwe Krupp scored at 4:31 of triple overtime to give the Avs a four-game sweep of the Florida Panthers and the 1996 Stanley Cup championship.

"The response has been overwhelming and it should be an exciting reunion," said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman. "The foundation of the Colorado Avalanche was started with that group of players, and to have them back for a celebration to start our 2010-11 season is an honor for everyone involved in the organization."

"I think we are all looking forward to seeing our former teammates and reminiscing about what was truly a special season 15 years ago," said former Avalanche captain Joe Sakic, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1996. "After these many years, being together once again will be exciting for all of us and hopefully the fans as well."

Further details surrounding the reunion will be announced next month.
