DENVER (AP) - Peter Forsberg had his No. 21 jersey retired by the Colorado Avalanche before the season opener against the Detroit Red Wings.
The team also raised a banner with his name and number to the Pepsi Center rafters Saturday night, where it will hang alongside those of Joe Sakic (19), Patrick Roy (33) and Ray Bourque (77).
Forsberg made his way into the arena by walking through the stands, shaking hands and high-fiving kids as he made his way to the ice. The crowd gave Forsberg a thunderous ovation the entire way.
The Swedish star remains a fan favorite for his tenacious play that helped the team to two Stanley Cup titles. He attempted a comeback with the Avs last season, but called it a career after two games because of a chronic foot ailment.
