Avs release next season's schedule

DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club today released its schedule for the 2011-12 National Hockey League regular season. The Avalanche will open its 16th season in Denver by hosting the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Pepsi Center.

Colorado will play a total of 18 home "weekend" games, which includes five on Friday, nine on Saturday and four on Sunday. The Avalanche's home schedule is highlighted by a visit from Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, March 3 and from Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Saturday, Dec. 17. The Avs will wrap up the season by hosting the Nashville Predators on Saturday, April 7.

The Avs will have an eight-game homestand from Nov. 18 to Dec. 4, the longest continuous homestand in Avalanche history (note: Colorado had an eight-game homestand surrounding the All-Star Break in 2008-09 and a nine-game stay wrapped around the Olympic Break in 2001-02). Following the season opener, the Avalanche will start a season-long five-game road trip in Boston against the Stanley Cup Champion Bruins on Oct. 10.

The Avalanche will face every Eastern Conference team for the fourth straight year, playing a total of 18 games against the East (nine at home, nine away). Colorado will take on New Jersey, Pittsburgh and Winnipeg twice each (home and away), while meeting the other 12 Eastern opponents once. The Avs' Eastern Conference home slate also features an appearance from the Philadelphia Flyers on Dec. 19.

Colorado will play 64 games within its own conference, facing its division rivals six times each (three home, three away) and the other Western Conference teams four times apiece (twice at home).

The Avalanche will play a total of 10 back-to-back games this season after having 15 in 2010-11 and a team-record 16 in 2009-10. The Avs are scheduled for three home afternoon contests, Nov. 26 vs. Edmonton, Feb. 4 vs. Vancouver and March 10 vs. Edmonton. The Avalanche's busiest month is March (16 games total), while their busiest home month is November (10-of-14 at Pepsi Center).

The Avalanche will have a six-day break in the schedule from Jan. 25-30 for the NHL All-Star Break.

In addition to its regular season schedule, the Avalanche also announced today its preseason schedule for 2011-12. Colorado will play a total of six exhibition games, meeting Dallas, Los Angeles and St. Louis twice each. Colorado's preseason home dates are Friday, Sept. 23 vs. St. Louis, Sunday, Sept. 25 vs. Dallas and Wednesday, Sept. 28 vs. Los Angeles. The Avs will conclude the exhibition slate with the annual Frozen Fury matchup against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The complete broadcast schedule, including Altitude Sports & Entertainment telecasts, and information regarding the on-sale dates for preseason and regular season tickets will be released in the near future.
