Avs Duchene selected to play in NHL All-Star Game

DENVER (AP) - Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene has been chosen for his first All-Star game.

Duchene, who turns 20 on Sunday, is the team's leading scorer with 18 goals and 25 assists this season.

This is Duchene's second season with the Avs after being drafted with the third overall pick in 2009. The Haliburton, Ontario, native says he's "absolutely thrilled and honored" to take part in the game that will be held Jan. 30 in Raleigh, N.C.

Colorado rookie defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk has been selected to participate in a skills competition during All-Star weekend. Shattenkirk spent the first month with Lake Erie of the American Hockey League, but still is one of the top scoring rookie defensemen in the league this season with 20 points.
