Patrick Roy brought the team from the basement to the penthouse. After years of struggling at the bottom of the NHL, the Avalanche are in the postseason.
They clinched a postseason berth with a win over the Sharks yesterday, but there's still two weeks of the regular season left. It's still plenty of time to improve on their seed, but the team is just happy to be in this spot.
"Getting the playoff spot, that's obviously tremendous, that's awesome for this team, specially where we were last year, and then this year," said Forward John Mitchell. "This is fantastic, it's great for us."
"Trying to get better every game, that's our main focus," says Paul Stastny. "That's what patty's focus is, is on our club, and on the players and that's what we're buying into."
The Western Conference standings show the Avs with eight games remaining, and only 7 points off the top overall seed in the West. Nothing is set in stone, they're certainly within range of the number two or three seed. But they may have to finish the year without Matt Duchene, who injured his knee in Satruday's win.
