Audit of Colo. utilities commission approved

DENVER (AP) - Colorado lawmakers unanimously approved an audit of the state's Public Utilities Commission over how the agency has handled decisions affecting energy, taxicab and telecommunication companies.
The Legislative Audit Committee voted Monday to go ahead with a performance audit of the PUC that will look at whether the agency is transparent in its decision-making under state law. The audit will also examine PUC policies for expenditures.
The audit was requested by Republican lawmakers, Sen. Scott Renfroe of Greely and Rep. Steve King of Grand Junction. It could be several months before the audit is complete.
One of the PUC's most high-profile case involved the conversion of some Xcel Energy coal-fired power plants to natural gas. The mining industry says two PUC members helped draft the law that led to the proposal, compromising their impartiality.
