BOULDER (AP) - Astronaut Scott Carpenter is set to return to Boulder on September 20 to attend the rededication of the park named after him.

The Daily Camera reports this year is the 50th anniversary of Carpenter's 1962 flight on Aurora 7, when the Boulder High School graduate became the second American to orbit Earth.

Boulder Parks and Recreation Director Kirk Kincannon says the city is proud of Carpenter, who he called "a truly exceptional American."

Carpenter is now 87 years old.
