The Canon City Police Department says there's been an arrest in a local case of counterfeit money.
The Colorado State Patrol arrested Herbert Elijil Rojo in Akron, Colorado, on other charges. After seeing a press release from Canon City, Rojo was named a suspect in the case.
Police say Rojo was arrested with a printer, copier, chemicals used in bleaching currency and the original $100.00 bill used to produce the phony bill that was recovered by Canon City Police. Investigators also found more counterfeit money.
Police say in the Canon City case, a $5.00 bill was bleached and reprinted as a $100. That allows the bill to pass a "pen test" used to detect fake money. A store employee felt the bill wasn't right and held it up to a light. When he did that, the $5 security strip could be seen.
Police say the bill passed in Canon City has also been passed twice in Montrose, Colorado and nine times in various locations in Arizona.
