Armed suspect goes on carjacking spree in Jefferson County

DENVER -- An armed carjacking suspect is in custody after a chase with officers.

The situation began around 4 p.m. on Wednesday and played out on Lookout Mountain, along I-70.

A man and woman were accused of carjacking a Subaru, before they crashed that vehicle. Then, they fled on foot through a wooded area before the pair were separated. The sheriff's deputies and state troopers flooded the area.

The woman was taken into custody without incident. Next, the man tried to steal two dumptrucks and a pickup. Then, he entered a nearby garage. He crashed a silver SUV through the closed garage door, before getting stuck in a swampy area.

With a rifle and handgun, the man hopped a fence onto 1-70 and tried to stop several cars. An officer jumped off of his motorcycle, drew his weapon and ordered the armed suspect to drop his guns. The man put the weapons down and backed away from the officer. The trooper then grabbed him and threw the suspect to the ground. Several civilian motorists got out of their cars to hold the man down, until he was properly restrained
