Three armed suspects tied-up a security guard and two custodians and the Citadel Mall early Thursday morning and looted several ATM machines located throughout the mall.
Colorado Springs Police were called to the scene just after 4 a.m. and were unable to locate any of the gunmen. Employees didn't know how the suspects were able to get inside the mall.
"They used a sledgehammer to get into several of the ATM machines, what we don't know at this time is whether there was any money in those machines," Barbara Miller with the Colorado Springs Police Department explained, saying the investigation was in its early stages. "This is a large scene, you're talking about The Citadel Mall, so they are looking through any evidence that they have obtained."
The mall opened for business around 10 a.m. after being completely shut-down for most of the morning. Employees and business owners spent the morning waiting outside wondering how safe their stores really are.
"It's just shocking, I thought we had 24/7 security and obviously we don't, I don't know what to say," explained Tim Dominguez, owner of the Lil Kids Stuff store. "Hearing that somebody broke in, that doesn't make me feel very good, about security for sure."
No descriptions of the suspects have been released, but police are asking for any information the public can provide.
