A Colorado Springs homeowner is thankful his security camera was rolling and he wasn't home when two armed burglars broke into his house on Monday afternoon.
The homeowner, who asked not to have his name or exact address revealed, said two men broke into his house on the 5200-block of Constitution Ave. just before 5 p.m. on Monday. They apparently disabled the security cameras outside of his house, but one camera overlooking a safe in his bedroom was overlooked. When he pulled up the footage he was shocked when one of the first images showed a suspect holding a pistol, police told News 5 it appeared the man was ready to use the gun if he was confronted.
"It's really scary, but I actually feel blessed, I'm positive if I was here I'd be dead," the homeowner said.
He said he believes the thieves started the crime by throwing a rock to break a patio door window to see if his alarm system would go off and if anyone was inside at the time. Unfortunately the alarm system wasn't armed at the time.
"I believe they saw no one came to the door, they then jumped the back fence, went into the back and kicked in a basement window," he guessed.
The security camera footage from the man's bedroom shows the two suspects flipping over his mattress and ransacking the room.
"Flipped my bed over looking for money, ended up cleaning out my safe of money and jewelry," described the homeowner. "They seemed real comfortable, that's the scariest thing about it, they seemed to almost be like taking a stroll in the park or something."
The bad luck for the homeowner continued, he had not locked his safe and the crooks can be seen loading up on cash and other items.
"I think they've been doing it for a while, I think they're going to continue on doing it unless we come together and somebody turns these guys in," he explained.
The thieves got away with quite a bit of cash, jewelry and several credit cards. Despite the hefty loss, the homeowner is thankful he wasn't home when the gun toting burglars made their way into his home.
"I thank God that I wasn't here...hopefully our community can come together and catch these guys before somebody dies," he said. "I just think these guys will, if they're not caught, they're going to kill somebody."
The homeowner said he is already preparing to move from his home, he doesn't feel safe in his house anymore.
The suspects are both black males who appear to be in their late 20's. One was wearing a gray baseball cap, a black t-shirt, sunglasses and had a goatee. The other was wearing a black baseball cap, a black and white striped polo-shirt, sunglasses and also had a goatee.
Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Colorado Springs Police at 719-444-7000 or Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers at 719-634-STOP(7867).
