Arkansas river access restricted, properties flooded

The City of Pueblo is restricting public access to the Arkansas river. The water's running so high it's now starting to soak properties in the county.

The river has flooded a few fields along 29th lane by Highway-96. Homeowner Bill Keyser says the water's also flooded several basements in the neighborhood, including his. He says if it gets much worse, he's ready to pack up and leave. "The way its rising it's like we got to be out of here as fast as we can, because this is no joke," said Keyser.

By Thursday, Pueblo's Parks and Rec Department should be finished posting warning signs at access points along the Arkansas River. For now the river's closed to water craft and tubers until further notice. There are a few exceptions. River rafts, boogie boards, river surfboards and kayaks will be permitted.

The signs will also include this warning: "Due to dangerous conditions, extreme care and caution should be taken in the vicinity of the river, as the flows may fluctuate."

"We wanted to reach out to the family again," said Jodi Fletcher, assistant principal. Fletcher explained that more than 250 people participated in the January drive, and she hopes to have similar numbers April 19.
