Three families have been displaced from their homes Sunday in the aftermath of a fire that scorched the first, second and third floors of the balcony areas and utility rooms of their apartments. The Colorado Springs Fire Department crews received the first calls from 911 at 11:55am and were on scene at the West Meadow Peak Apartments within 5 minutes. When crews arrived they found all three floors involved in fire. A second alarm was sounded for additional resources due to the size and close proximity of the apartment complex. During an initial search of the apartments involved in the fire, crews located a Black Labrador Retriever and were able to rescue the dog unharmed.
Two people were injured during the evacuation, one was treated and released on scene with minor smoke inhalation a second was treated then transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The fire took about 45 minutes to be declared out and under control. Fire investigation crews are working now to determine the cause and initial origin of the fire. Red Cross was also contacted to aide the families displaced by the fire damage.
