An alert police officer captures an early morning car thief

An alert Colorado Springs Police Officer nabs a car thief early this morning near Memorial Hospital. Colorado Springs Police dispatch center aired a bulletin stating the victim of a motor vehicle theft was following his stolen vehicle in the area of Galley Rd and N Academy Blvd. Police Dispatch later broadcast that the victim and his stolen vehicle were in the area of E Willamette Av and Logan Av.

When the officer arrived in the area and saw the victim's blue Dodge Avenger parked in the roadway mid-block. The officer then began to search the area for a suspect who was described as a Hispanic male, 6'2", thin build and wearing a black jacket, jeans and a black knit hat.

Not long into his search the officer observed the suspect, later identified as Robert Benton running southeast across Foote north of St Vrain and then climbing over the 10' security fence that surrounds the Memorial Hospital property. The officer immediately gave the suspect verbal commands to stop as he exited his police cruiser then followed the suspect over the fence and began pursuing on foot. After a brief chase the officer ordered the suspect to the ground who then complied and was taken into custody.

It was later determined that the victim had left his vehicle running, unattended, in his driveway when it was stolen. The victim observed the theft and began following the suspect in another vehicle while providing information to 911.

The suspect was processed and later booked into the Criminal Justice Center.
