One out of five Americans has untreated cavities, according to a new government report. The new study from the National Center for Health Statistics found about 20% of children had untreated cavities, as well as a quarter of adults.

Experts say budget cuts have eliminated some of the dental funds for people on medicaid, which may be contributing to tooth decay.

However, the researchers say these numbers haven't changed much during the last decade and that even people with dental insurance are looking for ways to cut out-of-pocket costs.

Dentists say the best way to prevent cavities is to brush and floss daily and to see a dentist at least once a year.
