Pueblo Police have determined that alcohol and high speed are factors that contributed to a fatal traffic accident on the north bound exit from I-25 to the Highway 50 Bypass shortly before 2:00 am Saturday. The Pueblo Police Traffic investigation unit reports that a 23 year old unidentified male was driving north on the I-25 exit ramp in his 2000 Silver Toyota Camry when he reportedly lost control and collided with a guardrail. The vehicle rolled across east bound lanes of the Hwy 50 bypass colliding with a 1996 Maroon GMC Yukon.
After the collision the Toyota came to rest back on the west bound lanes of the bypass. The driver of the Toyota was partially ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene as a result of his traumatic injuries. There were four other occupants of the Toyota who were transported to Parkview Hospital; three of the passengers had serious injuries.
Police say that the Yukon left the scene of the accident and was later located hours after the accident. The driver of that vehicle and a passenger were treated for minor injuries and the driver was later arrested on three unrelated outstanding warrants.
Pueblo Police had the road closed for several hours as they conducted their investigation of the scene. The name of the deceased driver has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin.
