Denver-bound airplane lands in Nebraska after smoke fills cockpit

An airplane en route from New York City to Denver was forced to make an emergency landing in Lincoln after smoke filled the cockpit.

Lincoln fire official Bruce Sellon says United Airlines flight 745, carrying 140 passengers, safely landed about 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Sellon says the flight crew reported smoke filling the cockpit, but it had begun to dissipate by the time the plane landed.

The cause of the smoke was not immediately known.
