An Air Force Academy graduate currently assigned to the Pentagon will be the new leader of the Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base.
Lt. Gen. William L. Shelton was named to the new post last week. He's also been nominated for promotion to general.
He replaces Gen. C. Robert Kehler, who was named to head the U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
Space Command oversees military and civilian GPS programs, other military satellites, launches of military satellites, the Air Force cyberwar operation and other programs.
Shelton is currently assistant vice chief of staff of the Air Force and director of air staff.
He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1976.
