USAFA, Colo . - Holy Cross scored three goals early in the second period and held off Air Force for a 6-4 win in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday night at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Holy Cross snapped an 11-game winless skid against Air Force. The Crusaders had scored just three goals in the last four games, but scored six tonight. The Crusader improved to 6-13-5 overall and 5-9-4 in the AHA. Air Force fell to 11-9-5 overall and 11-5-5 in the AHA. AFA is still tied for first place in the AHA with RIT, a 5-3 winner at AIC tonight. AFA and RIT are three points ahead of third-place Mercyhurst.
A crowd of 2,481 tonight was Air Force's third straight sellout and seventh of the season. Air Force has played in front of a sellout in 15 of the last 19 games. The crowd was also the 27th consecutive crowd over 2,000 dating back to Oct. 31, 2008.
The two teams combined for three goals in a span of 2:40 in the first period. Matt Fairchild got Air Force on the board at the 12:30 mark from Derrick Burnett and Jeff Hajner. Fairchild skated the puck over the blue line and went around a defenseman. As he went to take the shot, he lost control of the puck, but it slid over the goal line on the left side as the goaltender was moving to his right. Holy Cross answered at 15:03 on a slap shot from the point by Matt Clune. His shot, that found its way through traffic, was assisted by Matt Celin and Andrew Cox. Air Force answered on the ensuing faceoff, scoring seven seconds later. Jacques Lamoureux intercepted a pass deep in the Holy Cross end. His wrister down low beat Thomas Tysowsky high blocker side.
Holy Cross scored the first three goals of the second period and took a 4-2 lead. Mike Daly scored with a slap shot from the point at 1:38 after Jordan Cyr won the faceoff. The goal came on the power play, five seconds after a Falcon penalty. The Crusaders took the lead at 5:06 with its second power-play goal of the period. Matt Gordon took a shot from the left side that was redirected by Erik Vos. Five minutes later, the Crusaders took a 4-2 lead. Rob Linsmayer led a rush down the right wing and took a shot that was saved by Andrew Volkening. Rob Forshner snuck in and put back the rebound at 10:26. Air Force cut the Crusader lead to 4-3 at 13:07 on Derrick Burnett's fifth of the season. Kyle DeLaurell forced a turnover in the corner and fed Burnett out front.
Air Force had the first three shots of the third period, but Holy Cross scored on its first shot of the period. Linsmayer's centering pass found a wide open Luke Miller at the top of the crease and he scored his fourth of the year at 2:08. Early in the third period, Air Force had 70 seconds of 5-on-3 time and the Falcons capitalized. Tim Kirby and Scott Mathis played catch at the point and fed Lamoureux in the right circle. After Lamoureux collected it, he zipped a wrister over the shoulder of Tysowsky to cut the Crusader lead to 5-4. AFA still had 1: 42 of a power play remaining and had several chances, but were unable to convert. The Falcons pulled Volkening with 1:35 remaining, but it was Holy Cross the iced the game with a short-handed goal by Cyr.
