STORRS, Conn . - Air Force scored three goals early in the second period and held on for a 3-1 win over UConn in an Atlantic Hockey Association game, Saturday night at the Mark Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn.
Air Force took three points in the series and improved to 6-5-3 overall and 6-1-3 in the AHA. The Falcons are in second place, one point behind RIT. UConn fell to 2-8-2 overall and 2-5-2 in the league.
After a scoreless first period, Air Force took control of the game with three goals in the first nine minutes of the second period. Air Force got on the board first when Jacques Lamoureux made a centering pass from the corner and Paul Weisgarber scored his third of the season. Two minutes later, Derrick Burnett made a great, long outlet pass to Blake Page who got behind the defense. Page went top shelf to beat UConn goalie, Jeff Larson, for a 2-0 lead at the 4:36 mark. The goal was Page's first of the season.
The Falcons took a 3-0 lead on the power play at the 9:14 mark. Lamoureux scored his second goal of the series on the power play. Jeff Hajner made a pass down low to Burnett who found Lamoureux in the slot.
Air Force had several chances early in the third period to increase their lead, but was unable to do so. The Falcons held the 3-0 lead until late in the third period. With two minutes left in the third, the Huskies pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra skater. After Air Force lost three straight faceoffs in the defensive zone and were unable to clear the puck out of the zone, the Huskies got on the board. With 43 seconds left in the game, Alex Gerke took a shot from the right circle that went through traffic and beat Andrew Volkening high to break up the shutout.
