HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Six different Falcons scored as Air Force beat Alabama-Huntsville, 7-2, a non-conference college hockey game Saturday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala. Air Force improved to 3-2-1 overall this season while UAH fell to 0-7-1.
UAH opened the scoring at the 9:32 mark when Craig Pierce scored from Alex Allan and Nickolas Gatt. Allan skated down the left side and went behind the goal line. His centering found Pierce skating down the slot for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons answered less than four minutes later. Freshman defenseman Alex Halloran gave the puck to Stephen Carew who raced down the left side. Carew found Casey Kleisinger in the right circle who went high, blocker side for his third of the season. AFA took its first lead of the series with 2:33 left in the first period. Paul Weisgarber drew a roughing penalty on UAH forward Kyle Lysaght. On the ensuing faceoff, Scott Mathis gave the puck to Chad Demers in the right circle. The freshman went top shelf, blocker side for his first career goal and a 2-1 Falcon lead.
Air Force extended its lead to 5-1 with three goals in the second period. Less than four minutes into the period, Halloran drew a penalty and then scored on the power play for his first career goal. Jason Fabian found Halloran on the back door at the 3:29 mark. With 6:26 remaining in the period, the Falcons struck again on the power play. Kyle DeLaurell made a cross ice pass to Demers on the left who found Cole Gunner on the weak side for his second of the series and a 4-1 lead. Twenty-eight seconds later, AFA took a 5-1 lead on the rush. Kleisinger skated down the right side and sent a pass across the slot. Carew tucked it inside the far post for his third of the season.
Early in the third period, UAH had a power play but it was cut short when Graeme Strukoff was called for a five-minute major for checking from behind on a hit on Stephen Carew. On the ensuing power play, Air Force scored at the 7:23 mark. Tim Kirby's shot was saved and Kyle DeLaurell put back the rebound for a 6-1 lead. DeLaurell scored his second of the game at the 13:59 mark. Jacob Musselman picked up his first career point with an assist on the play. DeLaurell skated down the left side, went around a defenseman, walked in on the goaltender and tucked it around his pad for a 7-1 lead. With seven seconds left in the game, UAH scored on the power play with a slap shot from the point by Kyle Lysaght that went thought traffic and found the back of the net to make up the final margin.
AFA outshot UAH, 35-21, in the game. AFA was 4-for-5 on the power play while UAH was 1-for-4. Caple made 19 saves for AFA while Clarke Saunders had 28 for the Chargers.
Air Force returns home for a conference game against Canisius, Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7:05 p.m. at the Cadet Ice Arena.
