Air Force Academy could cut 10 majors, nearly 100 jobs

COLORADO SPRINGS - The United States Air Force Academy will have to eliminate 10 majors and nearly 100 positions if Congress passes a proposed 2015 budget, according to a news release from the Academy.

The cuts would also include a reduction in classes required to graduate, as well as cuts to athletic programs, though none of the athletic programs would be eliminated entirely.

The AFA says they will eliminate one Academy Military Trainer per squadron, a total of 40 enlisted positions.  Faculty will be cut by 20 military members and 9 civilian employees.  The athletic department faces a loss of 30 civilian positions and a 10% funding cut across all sports.

The cuts to courses and majors would be phased in over the next three years, so that current cadets are not impacted.

These cuts are part of a measure to reduce the Air Force by approximately 25,000 Airmen.

Majors slated for elimination are:

1. Basic Sciences
2. Biochemistry
3. Materials Chemistry
4. General Engineering
5. Environmental Engineering
6. Humanities
7. Philosophy
8. Social Science
9. Systems Engineering Management
10. Meteorology
