If you noticed some smoke in Fountain Valley Saturday morning, it was all part of an agricultural burn conducted by the Wildland Fire Team in conjunction with Colorado Springs Fire Department.
The purpose -- burn ditches and clear them of noxious debris, weeds, and vegetation so water can be brought into Clear Springs Ranch for both crop use and to replenish wells.
Aside from meeting all objectives, firefighters say the burn provided a good networking opportunity and practice for those involved.
"Everybody gets excited when they have the opportunity to do these types of burns," says Michael Myers, Fire Chief of Colorado Springs Utilities. "It gives them the skill and training that will make them more capable when they're fighting large fires."
Firefighters say they want the community to understand that fire can be used for good and as a management tool.
