A Colorado Springs mother admitted to detectives that she killed her 5-year-old son, according to an arrest affidavit. Shannon Dodson, 42, is being held without bond for the drowning death of her 5-year-old son, Jude Murray-Gomez. His lifeless body was found Friday in Dodson's burning bedroom at the Hill Park Apartments, 4320 East Pikes Peak Avenue.
According to the affidavit, when firefighters arrived to the burning apartment around 9:15 Friday morning, they searched the apartment and found "an approximately 5-year-old boy, wrapped in a blanket, between a bed and a wall." The boy appeared lifeless, but was still rushed to Memorial Hospital. Firefighters also found "a nude and wet adult female in a closed closet." The bathtub was also filled to the brim with water.
Further investigation found the fire was contained to a bedroom, the only room with any furniture in the apartment. Fire damaged the head and right side of the mattress -- the same location where Jude was found. According to the affidavit, "Numerous burnt and unburned wooden matches were located on the floor, mattress, and bedding." Firefighters "then noticed an arm lying on top of the box springs and realized it was a child wrapped in a smoldering blanket." A firefighter unwrapped the boy from the blanket and attempted CPR. During chest compressions, "water was coming from Jude's mouth."
In the bathroom, "the bathtub was full of water and there was a clump of hair on the rim of the bathtub. In the hall closet, Dodson was found "naket, wet, and sitting up with her arms wrapped around her knees."
Dodson was taken to the hospital. The following evening, a detective interviewed Dodson in the ICU. According to the affidavit, the detective "asked her if she knew why I was there to speak with her. Ms. Dodson became emotional and said that she did. I asked her why she thought we wanted to talk with her and she said, 'Because I killed my son.'" Dodson then "started to cry and said she shouldn't have done it and she didn't know why she did it." According to the affidavit, Dodson further confessed to the detective that "she thought they would go together and that she couldn't believe she did it."
Dodson is being held in the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center without bond. Her first court appearance is set for Wednesday.
