U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Air Force cadet David Higgins (San Clemente, Calif.) will be making his World Championship debut in the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Championships in Granada, Spain later this summer. According to USA Shooting, Higgins placed third at the Men's Prone Rifle competition in Fort Benning, Ga., May 9-11.
In the Prone Rifle event, Higgins' match scores earned him six points in each of the three-day's finals. On each consecutive day, Higgins scored a 621.3, 623.1 and a 624.6. The 18 points were added to his overall score (1887) which put him in third-place finish.
According to a press release from USA Shooting (May 17), Higgins will join the Men's Prone champion and a three-time Olympian Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) and 2012 Olympian Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis./U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit) at the World Championship. McPhail was the second-place finisher.
All of the rifle and pistol athletes selected at this match will join the 15 shotgun athletes named to the team thus far at upcoming ISSF World Cup competition in Munich, Germany, Maribor, Slovenia, and most importantly, the World Championship in September.
Men's Three-Position Rifle begins Tuesday with last shots fired Thursday. Another 30 junior-level performers will be added to the team following final selection at the USA Shooting National Championships in Fort Benning, Ga. in late June. The 90-person squad is easily the largest USA Shooting team assembled every four years.
