Medical marijuana advocates want post-traumatic stress disorder on the list of ailments the drug can be used for in Colorado. Advocates filed a petition Wednesday with the state health department saying that marijuana can help PTSD by alleviating depression and anxiety and curtailing nightmares.
Army veteran Kevin Grimsinger, who lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan, filed the petition. The petition will be reviewed by Ned Calonge, the state's chief medical officer. He'll determine whether the state Board of Health should hold a hearing on it. The board would decide if doctors could recommend marijuana for PTSD.
Colorado voters in 2000 approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes. A new state law imposes regulations on the industry.
