The Reno Aces defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 9-1 Monday night in front of 1,509 fans at Security Service Field.
The Reno offense jumped on Sky Sox starter Josh Muecke (0-1, 0.00) for six runs in the second inning, although none of them were earned as the Sox defense committed two errors in the inning. An RBI single by Josh Wilson and a throwing error on Sox shortstop Chris Nelson staked the Aces to a 3-0 lead. Later in the innings, Aces outfielder Wily Mo Pena connected on a three-run home run to make it 6-0 Reno.
The Aces would tack on another run in the third on an RBI triple by Cole Gillespie made it 7-0.
Aces starter Matt Torra (1-0, 1.50) picked up the win with six strong innings, allowing only one run on five hits with two strikeouts.
The lone run for the Sox would come on a third inning single by Willy Taveras.
The loss drops the Sox to 2-3 on the season while Reno moves to 3-1.
Game two of the series will take place Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. John Maine (0-1, 12.00) will make his second start of the year for the Sox. He'll be opposed by Micah Owings (NR) who will be making his first start of the year.
