It's a wake up call to all women doctors say could save thousands of lives. Actress and comedian Rosie O'Donnell had a heart attack last week but didn't recognize the symptoms right away.
200,000 American women die from heart attacks every year and an additional 42 million women live with heart disease, unaware of the threat they face.
The symptoms to look out for: crushing chest pain, sweating, anxiety and irregular heartbeat. For women, it can be pain in the jaw or upper belly.
If you notice any of these symptoms, doctors say take an aspirin immediately and head to the hospital.
Doctors say the common myth nowadays is that heart disease and heart attacks occur only in men. The truth is in every year since 1984, more American women than men have died of heart disease.
