A Taste of Winter

After a nice day Tuesday, southern Colorado is going to feel more like the dead of winter.

As of late Tuesday afternoon a cold front is moving south out of Canada in to Montana.  Temperatures late Tuesday afternoon have already dropped in to the teens in northern Montana.

Computer models suggest the cold front will start to move through southern and southeastern Colorado Thursday morning.  Temperatures will quickly fall behind the front and there could be some precipitation breaking out.  Initially, especially over the Plains, the moisture will fall in the form of rain but then quickly changing over to snow.  It is still a little early to be discussing snow amounts with any accuracy, but a couple inches of snow will be possible along the I-25 corridor and east.  Over the high elevations, several inches of snow may fall Thursday.

A second system will affect southern sections of southern Colorado Friday.  A cut-off low pressure system will send moisture towards Colorado Friday.  Cold air will already be in place, but winds should also turn out of the north bring another shot of colder air in to the area.  This interacting with the moisture from the south could drop a couple inches of snow for areas like Trinidad.  Again, it is a little early to be discussing exact amounts just yet.  Stay tuned!

POLAR TEMPERATURES

One thing is for sure, temperatures will really drop by Thursday afternoon.  On the order of 30°-35°.  Thursday's highs will go in to the record books warmer as the high for the day will likely occur shortly after midnight for much of the area.  Temperatures by Thursday afternoon are expected to be in the 20°s and 30°.   Temperatures will likely be about the same for Friday.

WEDNESDAY FORECAST

Wednesday will not be too bad, but temperatures will be cooler than Tuesday.  Look for partly to mostly cloudy skies across the region and temperatures will be in the 50°s.  - Meteorologist John Dissauer
