A prescription pain reliever might help prevent Basal Cell Carcinoma in people who are extremely susceptible to skin cancers.

Patients with a rare skin disorder called Gorlin syndrome are genetically predisposed to develop Basal Cell Carcinoma and often develop hundreds of skin cancers in their lifetime.

In a study of 60 such patients, Celebrex reduced the number of tumors patients developed by about 30% over a 2-year period.

Doctors caution against using the drug to prevent cancer until more studies are done.
