A bad night in Boulder for the Mesa Ridge and Air Academy girls

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Tambre Haddock scored 19 points and Jamie Katuna added 17 Wednesday as the Longmont Trojans beat the Mesa Ridge Grizzlies 67-48 in the Class 4A state semifinals at the Coors Events Center.

Haddock also grabbed 11 rebounds for No. 1 Longmont (26-1), which will play in its second straight state title game on Friday evening.

No. 4 Mesa Ridge (24-3), from Colorado Springs, led 21-12 early in the second quarter, but the Trojans went on a 14-0 run en route to a 33-27 lead at halftime.

Mesa Ridge drew within 33-30 with 6:20 to play in the third quarter, but the Grizzlies were unable to come any closer the rest of the game.

In the other 4A semifinal on Wednesday Katie Nehf scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Broomfield Eagles to a 65-42 victory over the Air Academy Kadets.

Tyana Medema scored 17 points for No. 2 Broomfield, which will play No. 1 Longmont in the Class 4A state title game Friday evening.

The Eagles will attempt to become the first girls team in Colorado to win five straight championships. The Merino boys accomplished the feat in the 1976-80 seasons.

Broomfield (24-3) led from start to finish, leading 30-21 at halftime.

Brittany Hernandez led No. 3 Air Academy, from Colorado Springs, with a game-high 24 points.
