DENVER (AP) - More than 500 state employees have voluntarily dropped dependents from their insurance policies following an audit.
In April, the state began requiring employees to submit a marriage certificate, birth certificate or tax returns to prove their spouses or children qualify for insurance coverage.
The Durango Herald says an audit found almost all 29,100 or so workers on the state insurance plan are playing by the rules.
However Kathy Nesbitt, executive director of the Colorado Department of Personnel and Administration, says 519 people had voluntarily dropped dependents from their insurance policies as of Thursday, saving the state an estimated $1 million a year.
The New York firm HMS Employer Solutions conducted the audit for $199,286.
Nesbitt says many large employers routinely do similar audits.
