More than half of the Fort Carson soldiers from the 4th Engineer Battalion have returned after a year-long deployment.

The soldiers spent their time in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Their main mission was to clear improvised explosive devices from roadways. They cleared 1,700 roads equating to hundreds of miles. Typically, this task is done riding in a vehicle at 10 miles per hour.

An uncasing ceremony at Tuesday night's homecoming signifies the deployment is complete. The other 250 soldiers are expected to arrive later this week.

Seventeen soldiers from the 4th Engineers died while deployed. Eleven were injured.
