PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Authorities say a fast-moving fire in southwest Philadelphia has killed four children and burned through a row of houses.
Fire department officials say four other people were injured in the blaze, which destroyed eight row homes and engulfed 10 houses.
Authorities tell The Associated Press the fire started shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, and it was brought under control by about 4 a.m. There is no immediate word on what caused the fire.
Jeff Boone tells the Philadelphia Inquirer that he saw a couch on fire on the porch of a house about five doors down from his residence. He also says he heard children screaming.
Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says, "This is a tragic, tragic day for the city of Philadelphia. We lost four children today."
